Enjoy this year’s flocked Christmas tree trimmed with navy-and-green plaid ribbon, neutral ornaments, and a pretty basket tree collar.
This holiday season looked a little different for us because we’re moving the week after Thanksgiving. Since I was decorating mainly to share on the blog, I skipped my usual routine of a grand dining room tree plus a family ornament tree in the living room. Instead, I focused on one tree in the living room and filled it with my favorite ornaments and accents.

I used the ornaments that would normally go on my larger tree and enjoyed decorating a smaller 7.5-foot tree this year; it’s much easier to style than a 9-foot tree. Since our new house has lower ceilings, I donated my 9-foot tree and purchased this flocked tree to replace it. The flocked look adds a soft, wintry feel that pairs beautifully with neutral ornaments and richer accent colors.
Pre-lit flocked trees sell quickly and the pre-lit version I wanted was already out of stock, but there are still a few similar trees available without lights if you prefer that option. I like to reuse the same ornaments year after year, adding a ribbon or one or two new pieces to change the look slightly. Some of my favorites are eight or nine years old and still feel fresh. My best decorating tip is to invest in classic ornaments you truly love and add to that collection gradually—there’s no need to replace everything each season.
On this tree I included a few DIY pieces I adore, like the DIY wooden sign ornaments I made a while back. DIY ornaments are a great way to personalize your tree and create meaningful decor that can be reused and mixed with store-bought pieces.
This year I did add a few new ornaments: I bought several large white wooden stars that I fell in love with in the store and later snapped up online. I used some of them on the mantel as well—they’re versatile and look great against the flocked branches. I also picked up some adorable gold bells (I used a few on stockings and shutters), though they ended up being more useful around the mantel than on the tree itself this season.
One of the easiest and most affordable ways to change a tree’s personality is with ribbon. This year I chose a navy-and-green plaid ribbon that I kept seeing on beautiful trees; it pairs so well with the neutral ornaments and gives the tree a crisp, classic look. Blue and green have become my go-to colors for Christmas decor, and this ribbon ties those tones together nicely.
Coordinated wrapping paper is another small detail that elevates the whole holiday display. I like to choose patterns that echo the colors and textures on the tree so the presents become part of the overall design. I often buy Sugar Paper wrapping paper for its pretty patterns and value, and I also use Minted for a couple of special designs each season.
To add charm to wrapped gifts, I often attach mini ornaments or small decorative items, or make large bows from leftover ribbon. These little extras tie the gifts into the room’s decor and make the display feel curated and whimsical.
