Cozy Navy Blue Living Room Reveal and Decor Ideas

This navy living room centers around an oversized sectional sofa — the ideal spot for the whole family. Navy walls paired with blue, pink, and green accents and a balanced mix of natural wood tones create a cozy, traditional coastal feel.

When we moved into our new house, the living room wasn’t the first space I planned to tackle. But because we spend so much time there, it quickly became a priority.

I grew tired of the golden walls and knew I wanted something bold and blue. The room’s large windows, white built-ins, and wide doorways made it the perfect place for a strong color — Benjamin Moore Hale Navy felt like the right choice.

My original mood board for this space included a Phase 1 list of updates:

Paint the walls Hale Navy
Remove the blinds and add white curtains
Create a gallery wall behind the sofa
Style the built-in bookshelves
Mount the TV and hide the cords
Style the console table behind the sofa with lamps and accessories
Bring my mirror and decor to the console table on the back wall

Phase 2 items I planned for later included adding a plant or artwork beside the built-ins, adding an end table to the right of the sofa, replacing the ceiling fan, getting a coffee table, adding two swivel chairs, and painting the built-ins and trim in Simply White. I did take care of the faux fiddle leaf fig and the end table early on because the room felt incomplete without them.

When we moved in, we brought in our sectional from our previous home. Fortunately it fit the space perfectly — I measured before we bought the house, and it paid off.

After about six months of gradually refining the room, here is the finished Phase 1 living room makeover:

I’m thrilled with the result. It feels warm and lived-in, and even though the girls have a TV space upstairs, they often prefer to hang out in this room. We love the sectional — all four of us can lounge comfortably and watch TV together.

One of my favorite views in the room is from the kitchen entrance, where you see the console table behind the sofa. The white table lamps are one of my best purchases since we moved in — they give soft, atmospheric lighting and have USB ports in their bases for convenient phone charging.

If you’re wondering how I power lamps in the middle of the room, we were lucky to have floor outlets installed. You can see the cords tucked under the left side of the console table if you look closely.

We reused a media console from our old house on the back wall. It’s a practical spot for sentimental items like photo albums and DVDs, and it also provides a place for my favorite mirror and a few decorative pieces.

The gallery wall to the left of the sofa is another highlight. I used wood frames that contrast nicely with the navy walls and add a polished, layered look.

Styling the built-in bookshelves was one of the most enjoyable parts of the makeover. Mixing books, ceramics, woven baskets, and plants brings texture and personality to the room.

This truly has become our favorite room. The sectional fits well, the color makes a dramatic backdrop for art and wood tones, and the overall layout supports family life — lounging, reading, and watching movies together.

One angle I don’t often share is the view from our front door. It’s not my favorite in-room perspective, but I love that the view looks out to our private, wooded backyard and screened porch beyond the wall of windows.

Removing the blinds and installing white curtains brightened the room considerably and added softness and texture. From the sofa you get a peaceful view of green grass and trees — a calming backdrop for everyday life.
