Happy holiday season! This year I had so much fun decorating our new home for Christmas. We moved last December and I simply placed a tree in the living room and called it done. This year, I pulled out favorite pieces, refined my plan, and tried a few new ideas to make the space feel warm and layered.
When I first started, I felt a little unsure about decorating because our new living room has shorter ceilings and a TV mounted over the mantel. To help visualize the design before buying anything, I created a Christmas decorating vision board focused mostly on the living room. That planning made a huge difference and helped me put everything together with purpose.
I didn’t use every single idea from the vision, but I kept most of it and the result felt cohesive and festive. Below I’ll walk through the major changes I made and how the room came together.
The two new decor things I changed for this space
1. We got a new tree
This year we chose a large pre-lit Frasier-style tree that fills the corner beautifully without overwhelming the room. The realistic branches and built-in lights give the tree a soft, welcoming glow in the evenings. I admit I almost left it undecorated because it looked lovely on its own, but once I added ornaments and ribbon, it felt finished and festive.
I wanted a tree that filled the corner but stayed proportional to the room. This was a bigger investment than I’ve made before, but the quality and fullness make it worthwhile — an investment we’ll enjoy for many seasons.
2. I changed up the mantel decor
Because we have a TV that displays art mounted above the mantel, I experimented with a new mantel approach. Instead of draping garland over the top, I layered three garlands across the front edge of the mantel to create the look of one lush, voluminous garland. That placement keeps the TV area clean while still giving the mantel a dramatic, festive feel.
Layering garlands provides depth and body without bulk on top of the mantel. I paired the garland with brass candlesticks, glass tree figurines, and coordinating stockings to keep the look balanced and elegant. The rest of the Christmas living room
Let’s take a look around the rest of the room. On the back wall sits our media cabinet beneath a favorite wooden-framed mirror. I added a few flocked tabletop trees and a simple nativity set to that vignette. It’s a quiet corner with a meaningful focal point—sometimes fewer pieces speak louder than many.
Our sectional sofa remains the coziest spot in the house—perfect for movie nights and relaxing with family. I used a mix of solid and plaid pillows, a soft faux-fur throw, and layered textures to make the seating area inviting and seasonally styled.
To complement the mantel and tree, I added small decorative accents on the shelves and side tables: brass bells, glass tree figurines, and woven baskets help anchor the room’s color palette and add a mix of metallic and natural textures. These pieces work together to create a cohesive, traditional holiday aesthetic without feeling overwhelming.
A few decorating principles that guided this room: start with a clear vision board, choose a focal piece (like a full, realistic tree), layer greenery on the mantel to frame the TV, and finish with meaningful accents such as a nativity set and cozy textiles. These steps help a living room feel festive and pulled together without clutter.
