Learn how to make a luxurious cocoa-mint lip balm using peppermint essential oil and simple, high-quality ingredients. This easy DIY makes a wonderful gift — and I include printable labels you can use for personal gifting!
Winter can be harsh on the skin, and lips are often the first to feel it. Cold winds, low humidity, indoor heating and frequent exposure make chapping and dryness common. A nourishing, homemade lip balm is an effective and satisfying way to keep your lips soft and healthy through the colder months.
This cocoa-mint lip balm blends moisturizing butters and oils with the cooling lift of peppermint essential oil and a touch of cocoa for a subtle chocolate scent. It’s simple to make, customizable, and stores well — perfect for making a batch to keep at home, tuck in your purse, or give as thoughtful gifts.

I’m a dedicated lip balm fan — I keep one beside my bed and another in my bag. After trying many store-bought and homemade versions, I fell in love with a richer, chocolate-scented recipe that inspired this cocoa-mint version. With a few pantry staples and a good peppermint essential oil, you can make a batch that feels indulgent and deeply moisturizing.
This recipe is flexible: you can tweak the essential oil amount, swap fractionated coconut oil for a different carrier oil, or omit honey if you prefer a vegan option (see tips below). The basic method — melt, mix, pour, and cool — is fast and forgiving, making it a great weekend DIY project.

Supplies You’ll Need for DIY Luxurious Lip Balm
- Beeswax pellets — about 1 tablespoon (beeswax helps the balm hold its shape and provides a protective barrier).
- Fractionated coconut oil — about 1/8 cup (light, easily absorbed carrier oil).
- Pure, unrefined cocoa butter — about 1 tablespoon (adds a creamy texture and subtle chocolate scent).
- Raw honey — 1/2 teaspoon (optional, adds humectant properties and mild sweetness).
- Cocoa powder — 1 teaspoon (for scent and slight tint).
- Vitamin E oil — about 1/8 teaspoon (antioxidant and preservative boost).
- Peppermint essential oil — about 6 drops (adjust to preference; use only therapeutic-grade oils intended for topical use).
- Empty lip balm containers or tubes — one batch yields roughly 8–12 standard tubes depending on size.
Equipment Needed
- Double boiler or a heat-safe bowl over a saucepan of simmering water.
- Small whisk or spoon for stirring.
- Glass measuring cup or a small pouring vessel for easy filling.
- Optional: a lip balm filling tray or pipette to speed up filling many tubes at once.

How to Make Cocoa-Mint Lip Balm
1. Gather your ingredients
Begin by measuring out all ingredients and setting up your double boiler. Having everything ready makes the process quick and prevents the mixture from cooling and setting before you finish pouring.
2. Melt beeswax, cocoa butter and oil
Combine 1 tablespoon beeswax pellets, 1 tablespoon cocoa butter, and 1 tablespoon fractionated coconut oil in the top of a double boiler. Heat gently over low simmer until fully melted, stirring occasionally. Keep the heat low so you don’t overheat or scorch the oils and butters.
3. Add the remaining ingredients
Remove the melted base from heat and whisk in 1/2 teaspoon raw honey, 1/8 teaspoon vitamin E oil, and 1 teaspoon cocoa powder. Whisk thoroughly so the honey and vitamin E fully combine and the cocoa powder disperses evenly.
4. Add the peppermint essential oil
Add approximately 6 drops of peppermint essential oil, then stir well. Adjust the number of drops to suit your taste — fewer for a subtle cooling effect, more if you prefer a stronger mint sensation. Use only essential oils labeled safe for topical use.
5. Pour into containers and cool
Pour the warm mixture into your lip balm tubes or containers while it’s still fluid. A glass measuring cup with a spout makes this step easier and cleaner. Continue stirring the mixture in the pouring vessel as you fill to prevent heavier ingredients from settling to the bottom. Let the containers cool undisturbed until the balm solidifies and a smooth sheen forms on top.

Printable Labels
If you plan to give these as gifts, printable labels make a nice finishing touch. Print labels on sticker paper, cut them to size, and wrap them around each tube. Include a short ingredient list on the label so recipients know what’s inside and can avoid allergens.
Tips and Variations
- Vegan option: omit honey and slightly increase cocoa butter or carrier oil for texture.
- Stronger tint: add a tiny pinch more cocoa powder for a deeper color, but be careful — too much can feel gritty.
- Storage: keep balms in a cool, dry place. They typically last several months; refrigeration can extend shelf life if you live in a hot climate.
- Safety: always use essential oils that are safe for topical application and patch-test a small amount on skin if you’re making this for others.
Making your own cocoa-mint lip balm is economical, creative, and enjoyable. The result is a creamy, protective balm with a refreshing peppermint kick and a hint of chocolate — ideal for winter care or thoughtful handmade gifts.
