Learn 10 great uses for Young Living Purification oil in your home!
Hi friends! It’s been some time since I wrote about one of my favorite topics: essential oils. They’re everywhere these days, and for good reason — when used thoughtfully, they can be a simple, pleasant way to add freshness and comfort around the house. I’ve been using essential oils with my family for more than a year now, and they’ve become a regular part of how we care for our home environment.
Last fall I paused posting about oils because regulatory guidance required changing the way we described their uses. I took some posts down and reworded others to make sure everything was compliant. That happened right before Baby G arrived, so I didn’t revisit the topic until recently. Even while I wasn’t writing about them, I kept using my oils every day — they remain a helpful part of our household routine.

Today I want to highlight Purification. It was the very first essential oil blend I purchased, and it quickly became a go-to. When my husband and I married he had a senior bulldog who, bless her, developed a noticeable odor with age. I was desperate to freshen our home without heavy chemicals, so I bought a bottle of Purification. I initially placed a few drops on cotton balls and tucked them in vents around the house — it made a big difference. Now I typically add a couple of drops to a diffuser whenever I want to neutralize unpleasant smells.
Purification is a blend that typically includes citronella, lemongrass, rosemary, tea tree (melaleuca alternifolia), lavandin and myrtle. It’s marketed as useful for cleansing and freshening air when diffused, and for topical use when properly diluted. As with any essential oil, follow the product label for safety guidance and test a small area first if you plan to apply it to skin.
Purification® can be used directly on the skin to cleanse and soothe. When diffused, it helps to purify and cleanse the air from environmental impurities including cigarette smoke and other disagreeable odors.
The many uses of Purification:
- Diffuse 5 drops in a diffuser to freshen the air after cooking strong-smelling foods like fish. Run the diffuser for 15–30 minutes to help neutralize lingering odors.
- Apply a diluted drop to a blemish to help cleanse the skin. Use a carrier oil (such as fractionated coconut oil) to dilute and always patch-test before wider use.
- Rub a diluted drop gently over an insect bite to help calm the skin. Keep dilution low and monitor for any irritation.
- Make a simple, natural bug spray: add 10 drops each of Purification and citronella to 4 oz. of water in a spray bottle. Shake well before using and store in a cool, dark place. (Do not spray directly on the face; avoid eyes and mucous membranes.)
- Neutralize stinky shoes by placing a cotton ball with 2 drops of Purification inside each shoe. Replace as needed to keep odors under control.

- Combine a drop of Purification with a diluted lemon oil and gently rub on the exterior of the throat (avoiding the throat opening) to offer a soothing sensation. Use a carrier oil and keep applications external only.
- Place a cotton ball with a couple of drops in your car’s air vents to help eliminate unpleasant odors while driving. Replace the cotton as the scent diminishes.
- Apply a diluted amount to a blistered area to help keep the area clean. Use caution and seek medical attention if blisters are severe or infected.
- Freshen laundry: add 10 drops of Purification to 4 oz. of water in a spray bottle and spritz lightly on clothes or linens before drying to help reduce musty smells if laundry sits in the washer too long.
- Keep a small spray bottle with a Purification-and-water mix in the guest bathroom as a natural alternative to chemical air fresheners. Shake well and use sparingly; ventilate the room well.
