See how easy it is to refresh your kitchen—no renovation or contractors required. These budget-friendly, mostly DIY updates add personality and style without tearing anything out.
This year I completed one full makeover in my home in about three and a half months. It may sound long for cosmetic changes, but for me it was fast—and I’m proud I finished a project I started and stayed with it until the end.
Writing down my home goals for the year and sketching design plans for this room made a big difference. Setting clear intentions really helps you make progress and finish what you start.
With the makeover complete, here are simple, affordable changes you can try in any space you want to refresh. Most suggestions are renter-friendly and require no major demolition or painting. These steps will help you see potential in a room you don’t love yet—and turn it into a space you adore.

There was nothing wrong with this eat-in kitchen, but I wanted it to reflect more of my traditional/coastal farmhouse style. I aimed to update finishes and accessories to better match my taste.
The curtains were a quick purchase from when we moved in over six years ago. I’d wanted a longer rod and different curtains then, but I couldn’t find what I liked. The wall color has changed since, too (Sea Salt by Sherwin Williams), so the original curtains didn’t coordinate as well as they once did.
The table had good bones but an outdated finish; the window blinds were falling apart—one set even fell down and stayed unfixed for over a year. Small details like that add up and made the room feel unfinished.

My Favorite Updates for DIY Kitchen Makeovers
1. Paint or Stain the Furniture
Refinishing furniture is the fastest way to change a room’s look. If a piece has great shape but not the right finish, paint or stain it. I loved the farmhouse table’s structure but not the finishes, so I stripped and re-stained the top previously and finally painted the base with a light, easy technique for a fresher look.
A switch in finish can transform a dated piece into a focal point that supports your room’s style.
2. Change out the Knobs
Swapping hardware is a quick, low-cost way to add personality. The table’s original plain wood knobs were replaced with hand-painted ceramic knobs in green and white to reinforce the coastal vibe.
3. Add Texture and Interest to the Walls
Go beyond framed art. Consider baskets, plates, planters, hats, letters, shells or a hanging rail system to create depth and tactile interest. I removed an old “EAT” sign and experimented until I landed on a combination that added texture without feeling cluttered.
A simple rail system allowed me to layer items and change them seasonally without new holes in the wall.

4. Typography Signs
Typography makes meaningful art—quotes, verses, or simple words can double as inspiration and decor. I enjoy placing typographic signs in unexpected spots for extra charm.
A sign with a favorite verse now sits above the window trim, balancing the curtain rod and making the area feel intentional and warm.
5. Curtains
New curtains instantly refresh a room. Hang them high and wide to make windows and walls feel larger. I also used a simple curtain-ring trick to make hanging easier and neater.
6. Blinds
Upgrading window treatments can have a major impact. I installed bamboo shades in a jute wheat tone that brought warmth and texture to the room. While not the cheapest update, well-chosen shades are worth saving for—they change the light and feel of a space.

7. Mismatched Chairs
Swapping in different chair styles is an easy way to add character. I replaced heavy ladder-back chairs with lighter x-back chairs for a more casual look. They’re a favorite, though I may keep the sturdier chairs on hand while my kids are young.
8. Lighting
Lighting sets the room’s mood—don’t overlook it. A simple, affordable chandelier updated the style of this space and reinforced the modern farmhouse aesthetic.
