A cozy, traditional primary bedroom is the ideal retreat after a long day. Here are thoughtful ideas for turning your primary bedroom into a relaxing haven, including a welcoming adjoining sitting area.
It has been a long time since I sat down to write a personal update, and it feels good to share where the decorating plans for our home are headed. I’ve missed writing freely about the home and the small projects that make it feel lived-in and loved. This post is a catch-up on the primary bedroom: what I’ve already done, what I’m planning next, and how I’m approaching the makeover.

Walk Down Memory Lane
A little background: I’ve been writing about home and life online for over a decade. This week marks thirteen years since I began sharing my decorating journey. I started as a stay-at-home mom with a toddler, posting almost daily about small wins and creative solutions. Those early posts were personal, warm, and full of the little details that made decorating fun.
Over time the blog evolved into a business. With that shift came advice to chase SEO and keywords so content would perform steadily. That strategy was important for growth, but I gradually missed the more personal voice that first drew me to blogging. Lately I’ve been reconnecting with that original love of sharing real-life projects and practical decorating ideas.
After completing a three-room makeover over the last few years—the laundry room, dining room, and butler’s pantry—I paused on major projects to focus on other priorities. But lately I’ve started dipping my toes back into home updates, beginning with our daughter’s bedroom and now turning my attention to the primary bedroom.
Those projects naturally led to a pause in other updates, but now I’m ready to focus on the primary bedroom. I’ve been collecting ideas and ordering a few preliminary items because I couldn’t resist getting started. We’ve lived here five years, and the room’s original paint (a pistachio-toned greige) was chosen quickly just to cover the previous color. It’s been a reliable neutral, but with seven windows the room is very bright—and bedrooms should feel cozy. That’s prompted me to reconsider the wall color and overall design.
Long-term we plan to renovate the primary bathroom, but before that I want to fully complete the bedroom so it feels warm and finished. Right now there’s only one piece of art above the bed—time to make it feel like a true retreat.
The Bedroom Progress So Far
When we moved in I created a DIY headboard and upgraded IKEA nightstands to achieve a farmhouse look. Since then I’ve replaced the bed frame and nightstands for a more traditional style. Much of the other furniture came with my husband when we married, and we brought a rug from our previous home. I also switch the art above the bed seasonally—coastal prints in summer and pine artwork for winter and Christmas.
We also installed a Frame TV opposite the bed, but lighting and finishing touches like lamps are still on the to-do list. I’ve been saving for the lamps I truly want rather than settling, so some small elements remain intentionally incomplete until the budget allows.
The NEW Bedroom Design Plan
Although the room is comfortable as it is, I want to do more to make it a warm, cozy sanctuary. The original idea leaned toward a coastal, restful retreat, but given the abundance of natural light, I’m comfortable moving toward a darker, richer wall color to create intimacy and warmth.
I plan to shift from the current greige to a rich brown or warm taupe. While brown paint can spark debate, it suits our whole-house palette and connects to the deep blues and greens used elsewhere in the home. Keeping a cohesive color flow between rooms helps the house feel unified, so a brown wall in the primary bedroom feels like a natural transition among the dark navy in the living room and the deep green in the powder room.
I’ve narrowed paint samples down to two contenders: Davenport Tan (Benjamin Moore) and Mouse’s Back (Farrow & Ball). Both are warm, nuanced browns that look especially elegant with ivory curtains and brass frames—details that will pop against a dark backdrop. I tested a few samples on the walls to see how the tones shift with light throughout the day.
Most of this refresh will come down to sourcing the right furnishings and sticking to a budget. I’ll DIY where it makes sense, but mostly it’s about patiently saving for the key pieces that will complete the design. I’ve written before about budgeting for home projects, and this makeover will follow a similar plan of prioritizing purchases that have the biggest visual impact.
The Sitting Room Plans
I love having a sitting area in the primary bedroom. It serves as a small secondary living room—perfect for phone calls, quiet reading, or a place to fold laundry without using the main living room. The sitting area began as a bright, open space and now features a comfortable sofa, a rug, and a few accents that make it cozy.
I’m happy with the sofa and the rug—fun fact: I found the sofa at a neighbor’s yard sale for $200 and it’s in perfect condition. The sitting area doesn’t offer much wall space, so changes will be subtle: a swap for a new accent chair, updated throw pillows, and possibly a small coffee table to anchor the space.
Final Thoughts
I’m excited to finally give our primary bedroom the attention it deserves after five years. Taking it slow, prioritizing budget, and choosing pieces that truly fit the vision has felt right for this home. Shifting to a darker, brown-toned wall color will bring the cozy, traditional ambiance I’m aiming for, and complement the navy and green accents used elsewhere in the house.
