Our back covered patio had been overdue for a makeover since the day we moved in. We kept pressure washing it seasonally, but the stains and wear never went away. This year I finally decided to paint the porch floor to refresh the whole space.

In our case the gray read lighter than expected in natural light; if you want a deeper tone, choose a darker gray. Many porch floor paints can be tinted to match your preferred shade, so bring a sample if you want a specific color match.
Supplies You Will Need to Paint a Concrete Porch
- Concrete bonding primer (designed for cement and concrete)
- Porch, floor and patio exterior latex paint formulated for concrete surfaces
- Painter’s tape to mask edges and trim if needed
- Paint roller and extension pole for even coverage on the floor
- 3/4 inch nap roller covers or a nap recommended for textured concrete
- Paint tray and liners for easier cleanup
- Quality paint brushes for cutting in along edges and corners
- Pressure washer or stiff broom and hose for cleaning the surface
- Concrete patch or filler to repair cracks or holes before painting
How to Paint a Concrete Porch
1. Clean and prepare the concrete surface
Start by removing dirt, debris, mildew, and any loose paint. A pressure washer makes this quick and effective; if you don’t have one, scrub the surface with a stiff brush and a concrete cleaner or TSP substitute, then rinse thoroughly. Allow the porch to dry completely — typically 24 to 48 hours depending on weather. If the concrete has grease stains, use a degreaser to lift them before proceeding.
2. Repair cracks and uneven spots
Fill any cracks, holes, or spalled areas with a concrete patching compound. Follow the product instructions for mixing and curing. Smooth patched areas so they are level with the surrounding concrete. Patching improves appearance and helps the paint adhere more consistently.
3. Tape off edges and protect surrounding surfaces
Use painter’s tape to protect baseboards, brickwork, and other areas you don’t want painted. If you’re comfortable cutting in by hand, you can work freehand with a brush; otherwise, masking ensures clean lines and prevents accidental drips on siding or trim.
4. Apply one coat of concrete bonding primer
A concrete bonding primer helps paint adhere to porous surfaces. Apply the primer according to the manufacturer’s directions, using a roller for the main area and a brush for edges. The primer may appear milky or translucent when wet and should dry clear. Allow the primer to dry for the recommended time on the can before painting — typically 1–4 hours.
5. Apply two coats of porch floor paint
Use a porch, floor, and patio exterior latex paint made for concrete. Roll the first coat evenly and allow it to dry overnight. A second coat provides better coverage and a more durable finish — especially on older, stained surfaces. Follow paint can directions for drying times and recommended recoat windows.
6. Allow sufficient curing time before use
Wait at least 72 hours before placing furniture back on the porch to ensure the paint has cured. Avoid heavy traffic and direct moisture during this period. Curing times vary with temperature and humidity, so err on the side of longer drying if conditions are cool or damp.
Tips, Troubleshooting, and Maintenance
- Weather matters: Pick a stretch of dry weather with moderate temperatures to paint and cure. Avoid painting in direct sun or when rain is expected within a few days.
- Add traction if needed: For safety, you can broadcast a fine sand or traction additive into the final coat while it’s still wet to prevent slipping.
- Spot repairs: For scuffs and chips later on, clean the area and touch up with a small brush rather than repainting the entire surface.
- Routine cleaning: Sweep regularly and wash with a mild cleaner to keep the finish looking fresh. Avoid harsh chemicals that could degrade the paint.
- Longevity: Proper prep and using a concrete-specific primer and exterior porch paint are the most important steps for a long-lasting finish.
