Plans for my Classic Ralph Lauren-Inspired Christmas Living Room
After seeing the “Ralph Lauren Christmas” trend and the mix of dark reds, greens, and blues, I wanted to bring that cozy lodge feeling into our home. My goal was a classic, layered look with tartan ribbon, velvet accents, magnolia stems, brass bells, and a few nostalgic touches that feel both elegant and lived-in.
My vision for a classic Christmas included a full, richly decorated tree, an asymmetrical yet polished mantel, and curated bookshelf and tabletop vignettes that highlight sentimental pieces and a warm color palette.
I decided to keep family ornaments on a secondary tree (in the bedroom) so the living room tree could be a more stylized, “fancy” display. That small change makes each tree feel intentional and special.

I love mixing blue with red and green here — navy or chambray tones are essential for balance and often make the whole scheme feel right. When blue is missing, the look can feel off for me, so I always try to include it somewhere.
All of the ribbon came from my stash — I layered tartans, velvets, and a few metallics. I added gold and silver ornaments, pinecones, magnolia leaves, brass bells, and velvet bulbs in the season’s palette. The only new additions were a few dark red and navy velvet ornaments to fill the color story.

On a recent shopping run I found nostalgic Santa throw pillows that were exactly what the room needed. I displayed a leather-bound edition of The Night Before Christmas and mixed in Santa ornaments for a sentimental touch that complements the rest of the house.
I even added a dressed-up holiday bear for a playful nod to the Ralph Lauren Polo Bear — a small, charming element I’ll enjoy for years.
Asymmetrical Classic Christmas Mantel
Can a mantel be asymmetrical and classic? Absolutely. This year I tried a full, asymmetrical garland placed across the front of the mantel instead of the usual swoops. I tucked in pomegranate and magnolia stems and finished the ends with red velvet bows. The result felt lush and intentional without being fussy.
