- Silhouette Cameo or another fabric cutting machine (optional — you can cut shapes by hand)
- Heat n Bond Ultra Hold iron-on adhesive (or a similar fusible web)
- Household iron or a heat press
- Sewing machine (optional) if you want to stitch around the appliqué or make your own cover
How to Make an Easy DIY Heart Pillow Cover
1. Make your pillow cover (or buy one).
Making a basic pillow cover is one of the simplest sewing projects and it’s a fast way to change the look of a room seasonally. A straightforward envelope or zipper closure works well. For a durable, textured base, consider using drop cloth fabric — it’s inexpensive and takes paint or distressing well. Pre-wash any fabric so it softens and to remove sizing before you add appliqués.
2. Gather scrap fabrics of your choosing.
Choose small pieces of fabric that complement your pillow base. Fat quarter bundles or remnants from a fabric store are ideal for mixing patterns and textures. Neutrals are versatile, but small pops of color or subtle prints can add personality without overwhelming the design.
3. Iron Heat n Bond Ultra Hold to the back of your fabric.
Fusible webbing like Heat n Bond gives the fabric shapes structure and helps them adhere to the pillow without sewing. If you use a strong adhesive, you may not need to stitch around the edges — the appliqués will stay put and the pillow can still be spot-cleaned or machine-washed following the adhesive manufacturer’s instructions. For added detail, you can use a zig-zag or straight stitch around each heart for durability and a decorative finish.
Note: Applying a backing or stabilizer before cutting is important. Fusible backing or sewable interfacing will make the fabric easier to cut, prevent fraying, and help the shapes keep a crisp edge. If you don’t have fusible web, a temporary spray stabilizer or fabric stiffener can work, but follow the product instructions and test on a scrap first.
4. Choose your image and cut it with your Silhouette Cameo (or cut by hand).
Select a heart shape from the Silhouette Design Store or create your own in the software. Resize to fit your pillow layout — one large heart looks modern and bold, while several small hearts create a playful pattern. If cutting by hand, print a template to trace and cut carefully with sharp fabric scissors. Place the fabric with the fusible side down on the cutting mat for machine cutting.
5. Adhere the hearts to the pillows.
Arrange your hearts on the pillow cover until you’re happy with the composition. Press each shape in place with an iron or heat press according to the adhesive manufacturer’s instructions. Use a pressing cloth to protect delicate fabrics and apply firm, even pressure. If you want extra security or a decorative outline, stitch around each heart with coordinating or contrasting thread.
