Fall Decor Ideas for Your First Fall in a New Home

Simple fall decor touches make this classic home feel cozy for the upcoming autumn season!

I’m excited to share some of the first seasonal touches in our new home. This is our first fall here, so it’s been fun to see how existing pieces fit into the new space and how a few thoughtful swaps can immediately make the rooms feel ready for autumn. Decorating a new house with many of the same items is surprisingly satisfying and a great way to discover fresh combinations.

First, let’s look at the living room. This room is the first one I completed in the makeover plan. There are still a few things I’d like to update later—such as the ceiling fan and the fireplace tile—but it’s settled into a comfortable, inviting spot that we really enjoy. We gather here for family movie nights every Friday, and I’m thrilled football season is back. Even when the TV is off, the wall of windows that frames the wooded backyard offers a lovely, changing view that feels especially cozy in autumn.

I kept the living room swaps simple this year—mainly new pillows and a few fall accents. I replaced dogwood stems in the buffet vases with muted orange leaf stems that really pop against the Hale Navy walls. The contrast of warm foliage tones against deep navy adds depth and seasonal warmth without feeling overwhelming.

My go-to pillow arrangement on the sectional has been a consistent winner. Layering different sizes, colors, and prints creates an intentionally casual, collected look. Here’s the combination I use:

A simple pumpkin topiary is one of my favorite, easy fall projects. I’ve used faux pumpkins in three sizes stacked on top of each other—just hollow the bottom of each pumpkin slightly so the stems nest together. It’s a quick way to achieve a layered, sculptural accent that can be reused year after year.

The built-in shelves beside the fireplace are a delightful spot to edit seasonal decor. I added last year’s dough bowl pumpkin centerpiece, which fits perfectly among books and accessories. Built-ins offer natural vignetting opportunities—mixing ceramics, baskets, books, and seasonal florals helps maintain balance and depth.

We still love our Frame TV and I switch the artwork it displays with the seasons. It gives the mantel area an artistic focal point without needing to layer additional decor directly on the mantel. A couple of faux olive topiaries finish the look and provide subtle, year-round greenery.

Moving into the kitchen, I’ve begun a planned makeover but am still waiting for a few key pieces to arrive. Given the current supply delays, plan projects well in advance. That said, some small swaps have already made a big impact: the dingy light over the breakfast table was replaced with an inexpensive brass chandelier that instantly warms the space.

I installed custom bamboo shades on the French doors and they add both warmth and privacy. The natural woven texture balances the kitchen’s light palette and brings in just the right amount of organic contrast. A wooden round tray on the breakfast table makes seasonal styling practical—display your decor on the tray during the day, then slip it away when it’s time to cook.

I added muted faux leaves to a few spots in the kitchen to echo the living room’s tones. They pair beautifully with a soft blue-green interior door, creating continuity between rooms. A washable rug makes life easier in a busy kitchen—being able to remove and clean it is a practical benefit that keeps both style and function in mind.

A few other updates—new cabinet hardware and a refreshed chandelier—have refreshed the kitchen quickly while I wait for more significant pieces to arrive. Little changes often create the momentum needed to keep a larger project moving forward.

A tidy kitchen desk, a small styled coffee station, and a few well-chosen autumn accents are enough to make the whole home feel ready for cooler evenings and family gatherings. Taking a little time to edit and layer pieces from room to room helps everything feel cohesive and intentional.
