Take a look at my charcoal dining room wall color — it completely transforms the farmhouse décor!
I recently painted the dining room in Benjamin Moore Kendall Charcoal, and today I’m sharing the full reveal of how it looks on the walls. This dark, neutral tone has quickly become one of my favorite finishes in the house.
When we moved in, the dining room walls were a surprising pistachio green. It didn’t work with the home’s aesthetic and, because the dining room is visible from the front entrance and my office, I wanted a change right away.
This was my view from the office before the repaint — the color was draining the energy from the space, so a fresh, moody backdrop felt like the perfect solution.
I had admired Kendall Charcoal for a long time after seeing it used on kitchen cabinets and in other dining rooms. It felt timeless and dramatic without being overly cool or sterile. After testing it in this room, I knew it would create the right level of contrast with my farmhouse pieces and warm accents.
New House, New Colors
In my previous home I left the lower half of the walls in wainscoting and a favorite blue, so I never felt the need to change it. But in this new house I wanted to be bolder — new house, new colors. I even toyed with painting trim and millwork in Kendall Charcoal, but ultimately decided to paint only the upper walls. That restraint allows the architectural details to read clearly while keeping the room cozy.
I’m so glad I stuck with painting the top half: the results are rich and sophisticated. The charcoal creates a dramatic backdrop that highlights the furniture and accessories, and it makes natural light feel even more luminous.
All of the furniture moved with me from the old house, and even the brass chandelier that I was tempted to replace now looks right at home against the dark walls. I’ll likely swap it for another gold-tone fixture eventually, but for now it complements the charcoal beautifully and adds warmth.
Gray Walls DO Work in a Dining Room
There’s a misconception that gray doesn’t belong in a dining room. I’d argue the opposite: the right gray—especially a warm, deep charcoal—can be incredibly flattering. It makes wood tones pop, grounds patterned fabrics, and allows metallics and artwork to stand out. Lighting and accessory choices will determine whether the room feels moody or elegant, so consider layering in warm metals, soft textiles, and mirrors to reflect light.
I’m excited to bring in color accents that play nicely with the charcoal backdrop. A few well-chosen art pieces and a textured rug will balance the depth of the paint and introduce personality. I’ve got ideas saved and a favorite rug waiting in my cart, but decorating patiently—one room at a time—helps me prioritize the budget and avoid rushed decisions.
For now, I’m enjoying this refreshed space and the calm, elegant atmosphere the charcoal provides. Painting the room was a relatively simple project with a big impact, proving how much difference color can make.

After moving, I reassessed what furniture suited the new dining room and decided to sell pieces that were too large or stylistically off. I also brought in my grandmother’s dining suite, which inspired a more traditional approach to styling the room. The result is a cozy, sophisticated dining area that blends farmhouse charm with classic details.
Before the makeover, the space looked quite different. The change to Kendall Charcoal has made the room feel intentional and finished, even as I slowly add rugs, artwork, and lighting over time.
