The natural textures and colors of the outdoors bring a cozy, festive charm to this Christmas Tree Farm–inspired mantel.
Each year I challenge myself to create a new mantel that feels fresh and that I’ll enjoy looking at for the entire season. Since I see this spot every day, it has to be something I really love. Some years the result falls short of my expectations, but this year I truly adore the navy and green palette, abundant greenery, and the nod to a Christmas tree farm.

I’ve never actually visited a Christmas tree farm—our household has always used artificial trees—so this mantel is more an expression of what I imagine that experience would feel like than a reflection of any memory. Inspiration often leads the way, and sometimes the decor creates a little wish-list of things to do someday.
The focal element is the farmhouse-style “Farm Fresh Christmas Trees” sign I made last year. It’s a two-sided piece that works beautifully on the mantel and helps set the theme for the rest of the decor. The small, galvanized tin trees that flank the sign add texture and height and reinforce the farm aesthetic.

I hunted for the flanking trees this season because they had sold out the previous year. If you’re searching for similar pieces, plan to move quickly when you see them; popular seasonal items often return in limited runs. When I finally found them in stock again, I was thrilled to bring them home.

One of my favorite discoveries this year was a planter-style stocking hanger. I considered building a similar planter from scratch—I’ve made a farmhouse-style wooden box before—but the store version had details I appreciated, so I waited until it was on sale and snapped it up. The little printed labels on the hooks didn’t arrive pre-printed, so I printed the letters at the size I needed and added them myself for a custom touch.

This year’s mantel also looks different because we’ve updated other elements in the room: new bamboo shades, fresh chairs, and a new rug gave the area a subtle but noticeable makeover. Those background changes helped the mantel styling feel current and cohesive. We also replaced the living room ceiling fan, which has made photos of the room more flattering and the space more comfortable.

I intentionally kept the mantel styling simple and lived-in rather than overproduced for a photo shoot. No stacks of wrapped presents or excessive props—just thoughtfully layered greenery, a few meaningful accents, and the stocking hanger. For me, holiday decor works best when it feels both festive and authentic to everyday life.

One charming little detail in the larger room shot is a basket sitting beneath the mirror. That basket holds my three-year-old’s “ornament play set”—the child-friendly ornaments she likes to move around on the lower branches of the tree throughout the day. It’s a reminder that holiday decor must survive real life, so I place unbreakable ornaments within her reach and keep fragile pieces higher up.

We still have a few projects on the list—some tweaks to the fireplace tile and finding the right coffee table—but it’s satisfying to see the room come together this season. Small updates like shades, a rug, and a few new chairs can make a big difference in how a space feels and how seasonal decor is perceived.

If you’re planning a mantel refresh, consider starting with a single theme or focal piece—a sign, planter, or a pair of trees—and build around textures and color accents. Natural elements like birch logs, galvanized metal, and evergreens pair especially well with deep navy and rich greens for a modern farmhouse holiday look.
Merry Christmas from our family to yours—wishing you a cozy, joyful season filled with simple moments and meaningful decor.
