A rug in the master bedroom adds warmth and a layered look to the space. Whether you prefer a solid color or a patterned rug, there are a few practical tips to follow when choosing a rug to place under your bed.
When we installed new LVP (luxury vinyl plank) floors, my main complaint was how much more sound they transmit. The finish amplifies footsteps and makes shuffling noises noticeably louder. I’ve mostly adapted, but the sound is still especially obvious in our master bedroom — if my husband gets up during the night or before me, I can hear him. That finally pushed me to buy a rug for the bedroom.
I was already planning a fall refresh for the bedroom — it’s been about 7½ years since we moved in and I hadn’t updated the space. The flooring issues moved the rug purchase up the timeline. After searching, I chose an ivory-and-beige antique-style rug. Although it leans more brown and beige than my usual preference, it complements the warm tones in our duvet cover and blends nicely with the floor.
The rug arrived in an ivory-and-beige palette with a subtle antique pattern. In person it looks rich and grounded, and it pairs well with the farmhouse-style details in the room. To avoid visual overload with the patterned duvet, I plan to use mostly solid pillows and neutral accents; a solid quilt at the foot of the bed would be a simple way to break up patterns without replacing the duvet.
I chose a 9×12 rug because I wanted to cover as much of the floor as possible beneath our king bed. If you have a bench at the foot of the bed or a seating area in the bedroom, a larger rug can help anchor those additional pieces.
Tips for Buying a Rug for Under Your Bed
- What size rug should you buy? The size depends on your bed and how much floor you want to cover. Generally, aim for the largest rug that fits the room while leaving at least about 18 inches of bare floor between the rug edge and the walls. A larger rug makes the space feel more cohesive and grounded.
- Rug size for a queen bed (or full) — Typical options include 5×8, 6×9, or 8×10. For a queen bed, an 8×10 rug is often the best choice if your budget allows; it provides generous coverage and frames the bed nicely.
- Rug size for a king bed — Choose an 8×10 or 9×12 rug. A 9×12 works well when you want to extend coverage beyond the bed or accommodate seating or a bench at the foot of the bed.
- How to position the rug under the bed — Place the rug so its long side runs from one nightstand to the other, with the bed centered on the rug. The rug should extend beyond the front edge of the bedside tables and the foot of the bed; ideally the nightstands sit just off the rug so their legs are not on top of it.
- Other placement options — You can place all bedroom furniture on a single large rug to unify the layout, or use two long runners on each side of the bed. If you choose runners, pick ones that are substantial in size so they don’t resemble bath mats.
- Rug edge and wall spacing — Keep at least 18 inches between the rug edge and the wall as a general guideline. This spacing creates a balanced look and preserves visible floor border.
