This beautiful, rustic DIY Christmas tree collar built from pallets is a great way to add a customized tree collar solution to your home.
When I set up my Christmas tree this year I decided to build a custom tree collar from pallet wood. Last year I tried to find a basket that fit the tree base but never found the right size, so I simply wrapped a drop cloth around the stand. This time I wanted something more finished and rustic, and a simple pallet crate was the perfect solution.
Why a Pallet Crate Tree Collar?
A pallet crate offers a rustic, farmhouse look, and you can tailor the dimensions to perfectly fit your tree base. It hides the unsightly tree stand, elevates the overall presentation, and can be finished with stain, paint, or a simple stencil for a personalized touch. Plus, this project is budget-friendly if you already have pallet boards on hand.
Materials and Tools
- Pallet boards or 1×4 pine boards (I used twelve boards cut to 21 inches).
- 1×2 pine board for the corner supports (one 4-foot piece cut into four 1-foot corner posts worked well for my tree).
- Wood glue for extra hold.
- Nail gun and finishing nails (or screwdriver and screws if you prefer).
- Optional: stain and brushes, and a stencil and paint for decorative lettering.
- Reciprocating saw or pry bar and hammer for disassembling pallets.
Preparing the Wood
Begin by disassembling your pallet. You can pry the boards loose with a hammer or use a reciprocating saw for stubborn nails. Once the boards are free, cut them to size. For my project the tree base is a 19-inch square, so I cut the boards to 21 inches to create a crate that sits slightly larger than the stand.
Assembling the Crate
Lay out three slats side by side and attach them to two corner pieces using wood glue and finishing nails. Repeat to make the opposite side. Stand the two assembled sides up and nail the remaining slats into the corner posts to form the crate. I left gaps between slats for a more rustic look and because I planned to place a drop cloth inside to conceal the tree stand.
You don’t have to add a bottom if the tree will sit directly in the crate, but it’s easy to add slats to the base for extra stability or to keep the tree off the floor. If you plan to add a bottom, measure and cut slats to fit snugly and fasten them from the outside or inside depending on your preferred look.
Finishing Touches: Stain and Stencil
After assembly, I stained the crate with a weathered oak–style stain to enhance the rustic appearance. If you’d like to add lettering, a stencil is a great option. I used a stencil in a stencil-style font to create a holiday “stamp” on one side for a farmhouse look.
Tip: For clean edges on rough wood, apply a thin layer of clear craft glue (such as Mod Podge) over the stencil first and let it dry. Then paint your letters. The dried glue seals the wood texture so the paint won’t bleed under the stencil and you’ll end up with crisper lines.
Troubleshooting and Creative Choices
I had a little mishap: the stenciled letters looked a bit too crisp for the worn, rustic look I wanted, so I sanded them back to distress the finish. Sanding created a soft cloud of faded color around the letters, which I liked for a more weathered appearance, though it might not suit everyone’s taste. If the stencil doesn’t turn out exactly as you pictured, you can either hide that side of the crate or embrace the imperfect, handmade look.
Final Thoughts
Building a tree collar from pallets is an inexpensive and satisfying way to upgrade your holiday décor. The crate can be customized in size, finish, and decoration to match your style—leave it raw for a rustic vibe, stain it for warmth, or stencil a message for a seasonal touch. Either way, it hides the practical elements of the tree and becomes part of the festive display.
If you try this project, consider varying the slat spacing, adding casters for mobility, or lining the inside with fabric for a softer look. The crate is durable, reusable, and can be repurposed after the holidays as storage or decorative shelving.
