Baby Girl Woodland Nursery Reveal — A Real-Time DIY Makeover

After months of work, I’m excited to share this baby girl woodland nursery filled with fun DIY details and personal touches.

It feels like a milestone: the nursery is finished, even though our baby is already 7½ months old. Ten months ago I created a vision board that guided this entire project, and I’m thrilled to share the final result. If you’re planning a room makeover, know that real-life projects—especially with a baby and a modest budget—take time. This reveal shows a realistic timeline and the small, meaningful choices that brought the vision to life.

The vision board was my anchor when decisions grew overwhelming. When I felt stuck or distracted, I returned to the board to remember color, pattern, and the remaining tasks. If you’re tackling a room makeover, starting with a clear visual plan will make finishing much more likely.

Some elements matched the inspiration exactly—especially the art that set the color palette. Other pieces were more practical: instead of buying new furniture, I painted our existing crib and dresser gray to achieve the same look at a fraction of the cost.

I’m indecisive about fabric, so the textiles here are different from my original plan—but I love the results. Fabrics, paint choices, and purpose-built DIY pieces pulled this woodland theme together: soft pinks and turquoise accents, natural textures, and whimsical prints featuring woodland creatures.

The curtains are decorative and a little impractical, but I adore them. I embellished ready-made curtains with pink pom-pom trim for a playful finish. For daytime naps, a dark navy blanket covers the window for extra darkness and privacy.

I refinished the dresser and crib with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint plus clear and dark wax to create a custom soft gray. Small details like pink knobs became charming focal points. The custom lampshade and the plush deer head were handmade; the deer head was a labor of love and one of the first items I wanted in the room. The antlers are a meaningful keepsake from early in our marriage.

Practical storage includes a small wall basket attached with washers to hold essentials out of baby’s reach: a changing toy, oils, coconut oil, hair bows, and a few burp cloths. Placing functional items within sight but beyond tiny hands keeps the space tidy and safe.

A hand-me-down lamb mobile remains a perfect early-months distraction. Above the crib I made decorative arrows after the Etsy versions I liked sold out—DIY saved the day and the expense. Chevron arrows and custom bookshelf ledges are also handmade projects that help define the feature wall.

The creature prints above the crib set the tone and color palette for the entire space. They were the inspiration that started this whole room—whimsical, soft, and perfectly suited to a woodland nursery.

Plush animals are plentiful—no nursery is complete without a soft menagerie. The gallery wall is one of my favorite areas, featuring a moss-and-flower initial and a “be brave” print that reflects the encouraging theme we use throughout our home.

Personal touches are the sweetest part of this room. A friend sewed custom pillows from fabric I chose; a pink crocheted blanket was made by my grandmother and passed down to both of my girls. Those heirloom pieces make the nursery feel warm and full of family history.

One practical lesson: finish the nursery well before your due date. I underestimated how long this would take. Late-pregnancy fatigue and the demands of a newborn made progress slow. If possible, complete major work early so you can enjoy the room once the baby arrives.

Note: I experimented with a painted drop-cloth rug but found it didn’t perform well over carpet. I plan to use it on hardwood in the future or layer a budget-friendly traditional rug when the time and budget allow.
