These four simple guidelines for styling shelves—or any horizontal surface like a mantel, console table, or tabletop—help everything look balanced, intentional, and beautiful.
After I built inexpensive farmhouse shelves in my kitchen for about $40, I eagerly started collecting pieces to style them. Over time I gathered decor from my stash and favorite shops, mixing old treasures with a few new finds to create a cozy, lived-in look. The result feels personal and polished, and I love changing the vignette with the seasons.
I waited to install and style the shelves until after I painted my cabinets and walls, so the finished space felt cohesive. Styling shelves is one of my favorite quick ways to add personality to a room—and it’s a great place to rotate seasonal accents like holidays, florals, or coastal elements.

Tips on Decorating Shelves
Styling horizontal spaces is like solving a fun visual puzzle. Keep these four guidelines in mind to create balance, rhythm, and interest on your shelves.
- Use the rule of three for groupings. Group objects in odd numbers—one focal piece with two supporting items, or three medium objects—to create effortless visual balance. You can mix more than three items when needed, but try to arrange them into smaller clusters so the display reads clearly.
- Vary heights and layers. Stagger tall and short items so your eye moves across the shelf. Use books, plates, or small risers to add height where needed—stacking objects underneath a shorter item gives it presence and makes the arrangement feel intentional.
- Repeat textures and materials. Echo wood tones, metals, ceramics, greenery, or typography throughout the shelves. Repeating textures creates cohesion; spacing similar textures apart keeps things balanced so you don’t end up with a clump of the same material in one spot.
Styling is a creative process—move pieces around, step back, and tweak until the grouping feels right. It’s a rewarding puzzle to solve!
Repeat colors throughout the display. Select one or two accent colors and echo them across different objects—books, ceramics, textiles, and small decor items. For my shelves I repeated a soft yellow in small ways (a cookbook, a towel, flowers, and a small sign) so the color ties the whole vignette together.
I also like displaying a few pretty cookbooks as decor; they add color and personality while being functional. Over time I plan to curate a small collection of attractive volumes that look intentional on the shelves.
Because these shelves have a farmhouse vibe, I leaned into that style with vintage-inspired pieces, galvanized metal, and natural accents. That said, shelves are easy to refresh—swap in coastal elements for summer, add navy or turquoise accents, or introduce seasonal florals for variety.
Think about function as well as form. Although my shelves are mostly decorative now, I plan to add useful storage like a pretty box for art supplies for my daughter, and a charging station for tablets and phones. Styling and storage can coexist beautifully—use attractive containers, baskets, or trays to hide cords and keep things tidy.
A cookbook sits on a small DIY chalkboard iPad stand in my display; I’ll eventually move the stand to the lower shelf to act as our family charging station. It’s a good reminder that small adjustments make a styled shelf more practical for everyday life.
The finished wall adds character and warmth to the kitchen and makes the room feel much more finished. Little styling projects like this are an easy way to update a space and express your style.
