How to Hang Curtains the Right Way
Curtains look best when they’re installed to create a sense of height and width. Proper placement affects how large your windows and room feel, and it maximizes natural light. My simple rule: hang them high and wide.
1. Hang high: Position the rod 4–6 inches above the window frame, or as close to the ceiling as possible while keeping the curtains skimming the floor. This draws the eye upward and makes the room feel taller.
In my kitchen I first hung curtains right above the trim, then replaced them with longer panels installed at ceiling height—an easy way to make the windows appear larger.
2. Hang wide: Extend the rod 3–6 inches past each side of the window trim so the curtains clear the glass when open and allow maximum light in. This gives a grander, more balanced appearance.
