I had so much fun decorating my dining room for Christmas this year—truly for the first time. Although this is our third Christmas in the house, I never decorated this particular room before.
I’m calling it a Gold & Greenery Christmas dining room because gold accents and lush greenery are the stars of the space. I also added a touch of plaid and nostalgic Christmas pieces, so a more accurate name might be Gold, Greenery & Nostalgia. The overall feeling is warm, layered, and timeless.
In our previous home the large 9-foot tree always lived in the dining room because of the big front window and tall ceilings. That made the dining room the first place I decorated each year. Our current house is a traditional cape cod-style that’s cozier, and our farmhouse-sized furniture felt too big here at first. Last year I skipped holiday decorating in this room because we hosted Thanksgiving here and the space was crowded.

This year felt different. I brought in new-to-me antique furniture that fits the scale of the room, didn’t host a large Thanksgiving gathering, and enjoyed decorating with a fresh perspective. I also selected pieces I plan to keep using after our upcoming dining room makeover, so the decor works now and will still be useful once the room is refreshed.
One of the highlights was being able to place a Christmas tree in the dining room. I initially tried a 6.5-foot flocked tree to echo the office tree across the hall, but it didn’t feel right. I swapped it for a taller 7.5-foot slim aspen fir tree and the room suddenly felt complete. Having two trees glowing in the front windows brings such a cozy, festive atmosphere. I finished the tree with gold ribbon bows that pick up on the room’s metallic accents.
For the table I wanted a simple but classic runner. I chose a tartan plaid runner to introduce a hint of plaid without overpowering the room—just a small nod that ties into other spaces in our home. I also treated myself to a set of nostalgic holiday salad plates; each one features a different vintage scene and the train design is a favorite. I paired them with new white dinner plates I’d been saving for years to buy. The white plates feel clean and elevated next to the gold chargers I found at a great price.
On the buffet I kept the styling bold but simple. A large greenery wreath and clustered bells create visual impact and scale. The wreath is lush and full—perfect for anchoring the piece—while the hanging bells add a little movement and shine. A large wooden bowl with gilded edges became an instant favorite; I filled it with pillar candles and pine cones for an easy, natural centerpiece that reads elegant and rustic at once. Layering a few tabletop trees and candles finished the vignette without feeling cluttered.
I enjoyed styling the china cabinet with nostalgic plates, small figurines, and a couple of baubles from my collection. I don’t have a vast assortment of little holiday items yet, but arranging what I do own felt festive and purposeful. Over time I’ll add pieces to build a cohesive collection for that cabinet.
Christmas Foyer
The foyer next to the dining room got a light touch: a mistletoe hung from the pendant and a few seasonal items on the entry table. A plaid picture frame on the console holds a favorite family photo and adds another festive textile element to the entry space.
Across from the entry, my office mirrors the seasonal look, and I love seeing all the little lights and holiday touches from my desk. That room is a yearly staple—I often decorate it the same way because it brings me joy every time I sit down to work.
