How I Went From Not Recycling to Loving Essential Oils

You’ve probably seen essential oils everywhere lately. Those small bottles of concentrated plant extracts have become hard to miss, and after trying them for myself, I’m genuinely enthusiastic about their everyday uses.

Essential Oils: My Story at TheTurquoiseHome.com

I know some people are skeptical—and I was, too. For years I heard about Young Living essential oils from my mom, but I dismissed them as a trend. A few months ago one simple, real-life experience changed my mind, and now I use these oils regularly and happily share what I’ve learned.

If you’re wondering what an essential oil actually is: essential oils are aromatic liquids extracted from plants by distillation or cold pressing. They concentrate the plant’s scent and properties and are commonly used to support emotional, physical and overall well-being in natural ways.

My Story

My introduction to essential oils came through my mom—she’d been using them for several years. I resisted for a long time because I’m naturally skeptical and tend to think I know best. Eventually curiosity won out, and I decided to try a few products myself.

Purification Oil and a Stinky Dog

About five years ago, my husband and I brought a senior dog into our home. I’m sensitive to smells and allergic to dogs, so having a strong canine odor indoors was hard for me. On my mom’s recommendation, I tried an essential oil blend called Purification and purchased a diffuser to disperse the oil into the air. The diffuser made a noticeable difference in how my home smelled, and using Purification regularly helped freshen our living spaces. (If the dog had stayed outside, it would have been even simpler, but the daily diffusion still made our indoor air more pleasant.)

The Final Straw: Lavender, Lemon and Peppermint

The moment I truly became a believer happened one Christmas. I sometimes have strong reactions to certain smells that leave me feeling foggy and irritable. While visiting my parents, my mom offered what she called a lemon-lavender-peppermint “shot.” She added two drops each of lemon, lavender and peppermint to about 4 ounces of warm water. I sipped, gargled, and within minutes the brain fog and irritation lifted—my head felt clear.

That experience prompted me to research these oils more seriously. The lemon-lavender-peppermint combination can be used in different ways: diluted in water as I did, placed in a capsule with carrier oil, applied topically (diluted) to pulse points or the soles of the feet, or added carefully to honey for children in very small amounts. Important safety notes: avoid getting oils in the eyes or ears; if accidental contact occurs, dilute with a carrier oil (do not dilute with water). Always research proper dilution ratios and check safety guidance before internal or topical use.

And the Rest is History

In February 2014 I purchased a Premium Starter Kit that included a diffuser and a selection of eleven oils. I began using the diffuser daily and experimenting with blends. My favorite daily mix is Stress Away with Peppermint—what I call “Uplift & Unwind.” I also use PanAway for occasional muscle soreness, Purification for refreshing laundry and living spaces, and lemon for adding a bright note to my water. One of my favorite personal products is a whipped coconut oil moisturizer blended with Frankincense for facial care—my skin has responded very well to it.

I’m not someone who likes to push products on others, but I do share tools and tips when friends are curious. Essential oils have become a simple, natural option our family reaches for to support everyday comfort and a fresher home environment. Using fewer harsh chemicals at home is something I appreciate, even though I don’t consider myself particularly “crunchy”—I still enjoy the conveniences of modern life. These oils have simply fit well into our routines and provided benefits I value.

If you’re interested in trying a starter kit, I’ve been offering a welcome package to anyone who purchases a premium starter kit through me. I’ve also started a Sweet Home Oils Facebook group where I share information, personal testimonials, and practical tips; if you’d like to join, contact me by email at TheTurquoiseHome @ gmail . com and I’ll add you to the group (it’s a private group, so I add members manually).

I’ll continue posting about DIY projects, crafts and home decor here at The Turquoise Home, and I’ll occasionally share essential oil tips and ideas as well. If you have questions about how I use these oils or want suggestions, feel free to leave a comment or email me. I’m happy to help where I can.
