There are countless ideas for decorating girls’ rooms. I’ve decorated two of my daughters’ rooms over the years—from nurseries to elementary-age bedrooms—so I hope these examples inspire your own projects.
Every year I do a major decluttering session before the holidays. Decluttering in the fall makes space for birthday and holiday gifts, and keeps the rooms feeling fresh and manageable.
I haven’t updated their room photos much since I shared their nurseries nearly five years ago. A lot has changed, but some elements remain. You can still spot pieces from their nurseries throughout, and many of the DIY projects I completed are practical and easy to recreate for a little girl’s bedroom.
Over the years I’ve completed several DIY builds and craft projects in both rooms, so I’ll highlight those that are simple and budget-friendly. Hopefully they give you approachable ideas you can adapt to your own space.

Turquoise & Pink Nursery Turned Gold & Pink Big Girl’s Room
First up: my oldest daughter’s room. She’s eight now, and while a tween-style makeover is probably next, we’ve kept many nursery touches because she still loves them. When we purchased her daybed and trundle, I began shifting the palette from her nursery turquoise toward pink, gold, and white. A sentimental bird canvas and tissue pom-poms have stayed above her bed for years because she didn’t want them taken down.
Many pieces I purchased years ago are no longer available, but similar items can be found if you’re trying to recreate this look. Favorite elements include a gold-and-white polka dot duvet and ballerina-themed sheets—simple touches that set a playful, cohesive tone.
I built small bookshelves from IKEA spice racks and sprayed them gold. The hoop art was made from fabric I picked up on a trip to New York, and the “You Are My Sunshine” print was created using a DIY stamp project I shared earlier. These handmade touches add personality without breaking the bank.
We’ll likely update this space into a more mature tween bedroom soon, but for now I enjoy the mix of nursery sweetness and growing-girl style.
Woodland Creature Nursery Turned Little Girl’s Room
My younger daughter’s bedroom still closely reflects the Woodland Creatures nursery I designed for her. Now four, she moved from a crib to a full bed, and we added an IKEA Kallax cube unit for toy storage. Aside from moving the rocking chair out and switching the bed, the room retains many original details I love.
To free up floor space, I moved her dresser into the walk-in closet. That keeps clothing and accessories centralized and makes daily routines smoother. The faux taxidermy plush deer head over her bed was a DIY project I’m still fond of—its handmade charm fits the woodland theme perfectly.
The wall bookshelves are a simple DIY made from boards bought at a hardware store; I shared an easy bookshelf ledge tutorial that walks through the build. The room’s centerpiece prints—featuring deer, mice, raccoons, and armadillos—helped shape the whole design. Starting with a print or a fabric you love makes it easier to build a cohesive room you’ll enjoy.
One practical update in both rooms has been ruffled blackout curtains. They’re affordable, come in several colors and lengths, and really help with later summer mornings and earlier bedtimes—an easy addition for a better night’s sleep.
Looking ahead, the girls are considering sharing a bedroom and turning the other room into a playroom. They’re even hoping for a bunk bed for the holidays—so we’ll see if that becomes the next project.
