‘Tis the season to deck the halls, walls, shelves, and mantels. The excitement of Christmas is finally tangible, and I love dressing our home in hopeful touches—cheerful pops of red, generous swaths of greenery, and cozy textures. It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

For a long time I didn’t decorate the kitchen because I didn’t love it. Once I painted the cabinets white a few years ago, though, the room came to life and I began decorating it every season. It’s amazing what a little paint can do.
Wreaths on the cabinets add instant holiday charm.
This year I also refreshed our little eat-in area, so I was extra excited to decorate it. Starting with the open kitchen shelves is my go-to: I emptied them and began again with a mix of vintage finds and a few new pieces, balancing color, texture, and height to create interest.
My favorite vintage ball jar candles are a cozy addition this season.
Originally I planned to paint my “JOY” sign navy, but when I mentioned it on Instagram, so many readers asked me to keep it red that I decided not to change it. My sister-in-law also pointed out that leaving it saved time—so red it stayed. That nudged me to add more red accents than I usually do.
I typically avoid heavy red in my home—partly a personal preference and partly because it’s a bold, traditional holiday color. This year, though, I embraced it in the kitchen and enjoyed pairing it with my usual blues and greens in the rest of the house. The result feels both classic and fresh.
Although the kitchen decor leans more traditional this year, the living room still reflects my blues and greens. It’s nice to let each room have its own holiday personality while keeping a cohesive flow through color and texture.

I kept a few favorites from last year, like the canisters that hold tiny Christmas village scenes. Little vignettes like these make the kitchen feel playful and festive.
I also love adding holiday charm to the coffee station. Last year I found adorable seasonal mugs in Target’s dollar section and they’ve become a go-to for hot cocoa after the kids are in bed. Little details like festive mugs make everyday moments feel special.

New this year: faux paper whites, a substantial wooden cake stand, and wreaths on the cabinet doors. Paper whites always read as fresh and wintry to me—perfect for holiday mornings—and faux stems mean I can enjoy that look all season without worrying about watering.
The cake stand was an impulse buy to replace a plain one I’d had since my wedding. It’s heavier and more elegant, and looks beautiful displayed with baked goods or seasonal decor on the counter.
For the past few years I’ve added small wreaths to the cabinet doors using inexpensive garland finds. They add depth and dimension to the cabinetry without a huge investment. I picked up a few that were a great deal and plan to reuse them for years to come.
I also repurposed older faux wreaths into hanging greenery ornaments on my kitchen chalkboard—simple, whimsical details that feel fresh this season.
