A little yard attention can go a long way with a few simple tools—an edger, a hose reel cart and fresh mulch. Here are three easy ways to refresh your outdoor space and boost curb appeal.
This post took a while to put together—bad weather, busy schedules and travel made it hard to photograph the progress at the right times. In the end, after several attempts and a lot of little improvements, we finally made some straightforward updates to the outside of our home.
When we bought the house the landscaping was overgrown and unkempt—large shrubs had taken over the beds and weeds had filled the space. The property had been vacant for a while, so the yard needed significant attention. Pulling out the biggest offenders, trimming back shrubs and adding fresh mulch made a noticeable difference right away.
Every year we try to improve the exterior a bit more. Eventually we’d like to repaint the shutters and the door, but first we wanted small, high-impact changes that would instantly tidy the yard.
One of the simplest upgrades was edging. An edged lawn and clean lines along sidewalks and driveways make a property look well cared for. We picked a basic electric edger to get the job done. It was easy to assemble and quick to use, and the difference was immediate—clean, crisp lines along the driveway and sidewalks that make the whole exterior feel more polished.
There’s something satisfying about pulling up to the house and seeing a neat edge where grass meets concrete. It’s a small detail that makes a big visual difference.
We also addressed a long-standing hose problem. For years we left hoses coiled on the ground, which looked messy and required moving them every time we mowed. To tidy things up and make watering simpler, we chose a hose reel cart and a resin wicker hose hideaway. The hose hideaway stays put in the backyard, while the cart can be moved to the front or around the side of the house as needed.
A hose reel cart keeps the hose off the ground, prevents kinks and makes it easy to roll the hose out and put it away. The resin wicker hideaway is a tidy, weather-resistant option that blends into the backyard and keeps things looking organized. Both solutions reduced clutter around the foundation and made lawn care tasks smoother.
Finally, we refreshed the front beds with new mulch. The old mulch had faded and weeds had become visible again. A fresh layer of high-quality mulch helps conceal bare soil and old debris, suppresses weeds for a time, and gives the beds a uniform, finished appearance. We selected an enhanced hardwood mulch to maintain a richer color and longer-lasting coverage than the generic mulch we used before.
Mulching is one of the most cost-effective landscape improvements. Spread a three-inch layer, keep mulch a few inches away from plant stems and the foundation, and you’ll see immediate visual improvement. Over time, mulched beds also require less frequent weeding and look consistently neat.
All of the outdoor work was done by my partner, and I’m grateful for the effort—he did a fantastic job. The yard looks refreshed and simpler tasks like watering and mowing have become more efficient. We’ll keep up with trimming and occasional touch-ups; yard work is ongoing, but these three changes—edging, hose organization and fresh mulch—have made a big, visible impact.
