I have three little nephews on my side of the family and they are such a joy. This past weekend we traveled to Atlanta to celebrate Mister A’s second birthday. My sister-in-law put together an absolutely charming barnyard-themed party filled with sweet, well-thought-out details. I’m excited to share the highlights and ideas so you can adapt them for your own barnyard birthday party or farmhouse-themed celebration.
The Décor
A few weeks before the party my sister-in-law and I talked through the theme, and I offered to make a paper banner to tie everything together. I used a Silhouette Cameo cutting machine to create a playful barnyard animal banner from cardstock. The cut shapes were simple to assemble and gave the space an instant handcrafted feel—perfect for a DIY barnyard birthday party.
Helpful tip: When gluing layered cardstock pieces, place the assembled shapes under a heavy, flat object while the glue dries. This prevents the pieces from curling and keeps the banner looking crisp and professional.
In addition to the animal banner, I cut out a little red barn from cardstock to use as an accent on a burlap wreath. Small paper cutouts like this work wonderfully on wreaths, gift tags, and as cake toppers when you want consistent design elements throughout the party.
One of my favorite touches was the mantel display: cow-print fabric paired with red gingham bunting created an instant farmhouse vibe. Layering patterns like cow print and gingham gives the space personality without feeling overdone.
Party favors were simply styled: small barn animal toys nestled in shredded paper “hay” and tied up for guests. That little presentation makes favors feel special, and the hay element reinforced the barnyard theme in a playful, child-friendly way.
She also added farm animal balloons and themed stickers to the décor. Small, inexpensive items like these add color and movement to the room and are great for keeping toddlers engaged and delighted.
They brought an extra playful layer of detail that tied in well with the paper elements and table styling.
The Food
Every food choice echoed the barnyard theme, making the table both charming and cohesive. For a simple but festive table runner, my sister-in-law hemmed a long strip of red gingham fabric and layered it over a plain white tablecloth. That quick sewing detail added a polished, rustic look without much effort.
The menu included kid-friendly favorites presented with a nod to the farm: butterscotch haystacks, deviled eggs, pigs in a blanket, cheddar bunnies, and chicken nuggets. Those haystacks were made the morning of the party and proved tempting all day long—definitely a hit with both kids and adults.
Cupcakes were decorated with adorable fondant barnyard toppers made by a friend—simple, sweet accents that elevated the dessert table. If you can’t source custom toppers, homemade fondant shapes or themed picks work just as well and keep the look cohesive.
No barnyard table is complete without a “vegetable patch.” A simple arrangement of raw veggies presented like a garden added color and balanced the sweeter treats.
Utensils were organized in mason jars wrapped with gingham ribbon, and the table settings featured simple red plates paired with cow-print napkins for an unmistakable barnyard flair. Small styling choices like coordinating napkins and ribbon go a long way toward creating a unified party aesthetic.
It was such a joy to celebrate Mister A’s birthday with family. The thoughtful combination of DIY paper details, patterned textiles, themed treats, and easy-to-make accents created a warm, memorable barnyard birthday party. Happy birthday, Mister A—we love you!
