Guest Bathroom Makeover: A Traditional Americana Update

Hi friends — I hope your week is off to a great start! I spent the past weekend refreshing my guest bathroom, and I’m thrilled with the result. Big thanks to my mom for helping with the kiddo and for finally taking down my Christmas decor — otherwise it might still be up! This project involved painting the walls and cabinets, updating the hardware, and adding a few pieces of color and personality.

I partnered with Ace Hardware for this weekend project to get supplies and product recommendations. The plan was simple: swap out the basic hardware, paint the cabinetry and walls, and introduce a few decor accents to create a cohesive, welcoming space. Earlier I painted the walls to eliminate the orange-tinged builder’s beige, which made a huge difference on its own.

Before this refresh, I hadn’t updated the bathroom since we moved in—aside from hanging a shower curtain so it would be functional. The walls were beige and the cabinetry was a honey oak tone that doesn’t match my personal style. The towel ring, towel bar and toilet paper holder were basic, inexpensive pieces. They worked but felt insubstantial next to the new look I envisioned.

This bathroom’s small size and lack of natural light make it tough to photograph, so you’ll see the transformation in a series of detail shots rather than a single wide-angle reveal. If some photos show slight color variation, it’s due to lighting and editing — the paint tones are much truer in person.

The transformation began with paint. I chose Oyster Pearl for the walls and Ominous Cloud for the cabinets — a muted grey-blue paired with a soft warm cabinet tone. Both colors work beautifully together and instantly elevated the space.

For the cabinets I used Ace Hardware’s Cabinet and Trim paint, a semi-gloss alkyd enamel with great self-leveling properties. It leaves a factory-like finish when applied correctly. My best advice: apply very thin coats and allow proper drying time between coats. I ended up doing three thin coats on the cabinets for a flawless result.

To finish the look, I replaced the drawer hardware while keeping the existing knobs on the cabinet doors. I’d been wanting bin pulls for some time, and they add a substantial, classic detail that complements the Traditional Americana vibe I was aiming for.

My color inspiration came from a set of Norman Rockwell prints I inherited from my great-grandmother. I discovered them in a box years ago and they felt perfect for giving the guest bath a warm, nostalgic Americana character. The muted grey-blue wall, touches of red in the towels, and the vintage-style artwork come together to create a classic, cheerful atmosphere.

I held onto a pair of red towels I received for my wedding and debated donating them, but they ended up being the perfect pop of color here. Together with the Norman Rockwell pieces, the towels lend a cozy, patriotic nod without overwhelming the calm palette.

Small decorative details — a framed print reminding me to live intentionally and a few curated accessories — complete the room. I replaced the basic toilet paper holder and towel hardware with more substantial pieces, and the difference in quality and aesthetics is noticeable.
