I’m completely smitten with all things citrus—lemon, tangerine, lime, grapefruit, orange. If it’s bright, zesty, and citrus-flavored, I’m in. You’ll often spot citrus motifs in my summer décor and projects.
When it came time to pick end-of-year gifts for my daughter’s preschool teachers, a simple, cheerful idea came to mind: stainless steel cups personalized with monograms and a tiny lemon vinyl decal. Stainless steel feels more durable and eco-friendly than disposable plastic, and it’s something the teachers could actually use all summer long.
I picked up three stainless steel cups—two for the teachers and one for myself. They’re easy to find at coffee shops and online, and they make a polished canvas for vinyl decals and monograms. To make each cup feel personal, I created monograms using a Monogram KK font in Silhouette software.
If you’re new to cutting vinyl, a few tips will help your monogram look crisp when applied to a curved surface. Because the cup is cylindrical and not perfectly flat, I spaced the initials close to each other rather than overlapping them. Overlapping on a rounded surface can cause bubbling and misalignment; keeping the letters separate makes the finished decal sit smoothly.
I used transfer tape to lift the vinyl monogram from its backing. Then I positioned the decal on the cup, starting at the center and smoothing outward toward the sides. Small differences in angle or placement—even if the transfer tape looks slightly offset—are barely noticeable once the tape is removed and the vinyl adheres.
For the lemon decal, I layered two shades of yellow to create a simple, two-toned fruit. I cut the outer shape in a deeper yellow and the inner slice in a lighter yellow, then used transfer tape to align and apply each layer together. The layered vinyl gives a small but charming pop of color beside the monogram.
Assembling the lemon on the transfer tape first makes it easy to place as a single unit on the cup. Once applied, the little lemon looks cheerful and professional—the perfect accent for a summer-themed teacher gift.
After the decals were in place, I finished each cup with a small printable tag that reads “Have a Refreshing Summer” and tied a raffia bow around the lid. The tags add a handmade feel and are an easy way to convey a seasonal sentiment without a lot of fuss.
