A calm, restful master bedroom design creates the ideal retreat to unwind after a long day. Here are ideas for building a serene master bedroom and an inviting adjoining sitting area.
I’m thrilled to share this bedroom design vision that I’ve been imagining for about a decade. In a recent post I mentioned I planned to reveal my bedroom plans before the end of the year, and now I’m finally sharing the full concept.
Before diving into details, a quick note about budget and timing: some items in the design are investments and may cause sticker shock. That said, this room reflects years of dreaming, saving, and layering smaller projects and DIY updates to achieve a cohesive, elevated look.
For several years we used a simple DIY farmhouse headboard that cost under $100 and served us well. We recently gifted that headboard to a friend, which feels great—seeing pieces get a second life is so satisfying. Our nightstands for the past several years were inexpensive hacked IKEA dressers that I refreshed; I’ll pass those along when the new nightstands arrive.
“Must Have” Design Feature in Our Bedroom
One of my non-negotiables when buying this home was having two windows flanking the bed. I’ve always imagined a king bed centered between windows, with lovely woven shades and ivory curtains. That balanced window configuration transforms the focal point of the room and gives the bed a framed, intentional look.
That image was a big inspiration for me—I love the balance and light. In our previous bedroom we had only one window and it always felt off-center; having both windows makes a dramatic difference.
The Coastal Vibe
A bedroom should feel restful and cozy—after all, we spend about a third of our lives sleeping. For this room I’m inspired by the beach without it being overtly nautical: warm light wood tones that suggest sand, and soft pops of blue and blue-green for a calm coastal palette.
Because our home leans traditional Cape Cod in style, I plan to honor that with blue-greens, warm wood finishes, and brass accents—an elegant, cohesive mix that reads timeless rather than trendy.
Where We Started
To appreciate the transformation, here’s what the room looked like before the makeover began.
The pistachio green walls weren’t ideal for me, so we recently repainted in a warm neutral (Revere Pewter), which already brightened and calmed the space dramatically. I’ll share more on paint and finishes soon.
We originally planned to wait and make larger structural changes—removing columns and refinishing floors—when funds allowed. For now, we’re improving the room with paint, window treatments, furniture, and accessories, and will tackle the bigger renovations later.
The bedroom’s sitting area is a wonderful bonus. It’s filled with windows overlooking our private wooded backyard and will be a favorite spot for morning coffee, quiet reading, or for my husband to take phone calls. During the early days of quarantine it doubled as a useful home office.
Restful Master Bedroom Design Board
Here’s the overall design direction: luxe wood tones, blue-green accents, warm neutrals, and textured window treatments to emphasize calm and comfort. The mood board pulls together bed, nightstands, curtains, shades, rugs, lighting, and seating to form a cohesive coastal-traditional retreat.
This project will unfold over a few months as we save for larger pieces and wait for deliveries. I plan to time some purchases with seasonal sales to make the most of budget opportunities.
Window Coverings in the Bedroom
This room includes seven windows and two French doors, so window coverings are a major part of the design. The plan is to install woven bamboo shades on the French doors and the two windows that flank the bed to introduce natural texture, and pair them with linen-cotton ivory curtains for softness and privacy.
We’ll use blackout curtains on the southeast-facing windows and lighter linen curtains on the windows facing the back yard to balance light control with a breezy, layered look. I also chose brass curtain rods and matching rings and finials for a refined, cohesive finish.
Bed and Nightstand
Finding a bed frame that accommodates our adjustable XL twin bases was a priority. My husband preferred a wooden bed rather than an upholstered one, so we chose a classic wood bed in a light seadrift finish. I paired that with nightstands in a complementary finish to keep the look cohesive in front of the windows.
Bedding
Bedding can instantly elevate a bedroom. I’ve typically kept things simple with a duvet and the matching shams, but this time I’m aiming for a layered, magazine-worthy look with an ivory quilt, euro shams, and a patterned duvet in soft paisley tones for a pop of color without overwhelming the calm palette.
Accessories
Accessories bring the design to life: a coastal-inspired canvas above the bed, recycled glass lamps with soft linen shades, a mix of framed photos, and greenery—real or faux—will complete the bedside styling. Small decorative objects and a couple of well-chosen books add personality and warmth.
Rugs for the Bedroom and Sitting Area
Both rugs in the design are ones I already own and love. A beige-and-charcoal rug anchors the bed and is versatile and low-maintenance, while an olive-and-charcoal rug defines the sitting area and complements the palette. The layered rugs help separate zones while maintaining visual harmony.
Furniture in the Sitting Area
For the sitting area I want comfortable, inviting seating: a loveseat that fits the space, a leather club chair moved from the living room, and a round coffee table to soften lines and encourage conversation. The idea is to create a functional nook for reading, morning coffee, and calls without crowding the room.
I’m also considering refinishing or painting existing pieces like the armoire and dresser instead of replacing them, and I may update the ceiling fans to better match the new aesthetic. Small changes like paint, hardware, and lighting can make a big impact.
I’m excited to work through this makeover over the next few months and share the progress. The goal is a restful, coastal-inspired master bedroom with an inviting sitting area that feels intentional, comfortable, and timeless.
