Refresh your built-in bookshelves for summer with simple blue and white decor. Get easy shelf styling tips and ideas for a light, breezy look you’ll love.

Summer always inspires me to brighten things up around the house — lighter textiles, fresh colors, and an overall airy feel. This season I focused on our living room built-in bookshelves and gave them a quick, modern update using a classic palette: blue and white. It’s a timeless combination that reads crisp and calming, perfect for creating a relaxed summer atmosphere.
Before styling, I removed everything from the shelves and edited down to the pieces I wanted to feature. Starting with a blank slate is the fastest way to create cohesive shelf styling that highlights your favorite objects without looking cluttered.

Here’s how I gave my built-ins a summery update:
1. Cleared the Shelves
I removed every item so I could see the overall shape and spacing of the built-ins. Clearing the shelves helps you: identify what you love, spot pieces that need to be stored or gifted, and think about balance and negative space. Editing is just as important as adding: fewer, well-chosen objects read more intentional than lots of small, competing items.
Quick tips:
- Work shelf by shelf so the project stays manageable.
- Sort items into keep, store, or donate piles to speed the process.
- Keep a couple of functional items (books, a lamp) to anchor the look.
2. Layered in Blue & White Pieces
Blue and white pieces instantly bring a fresh, coastal feel without feeling themed or seasonal. I used a mix of ginger jars, frames, and small ceramics in varying shades of blue paired with crisp white pottery. The goal is to create cohesion through color while keeping variety in shape and scale.
Styling pointers: Stack two to three books and place a small object on top, lean framed art against the back of the shelf, and group items in odd numbers for a natural, curated look. Mixing new pieces with thrifted finds keeps the styling approachable and personal.
3. Added Natural Texture
To balance the cool tones of blue and white, I added natural textures: a woven lampshade, a basket-style planter, a piece of driftwood, and wooden boxes. These elements warm the display and add depth without competing for attention.

Natural textures also help the shelving feel layered and lived-in. Small woven or wooden accents work especially well when combined with smooth glazed ceramics and metallic touches like a brass frame or small candlestick.
4. Brought in Life
Plants—real or faux—bring immediate freshness and movement to shelves. For this styling I used a small faux fern, a trailing pothos, and a couple of compact boxwood topiaries for year-round structure. Even a few sprigs in a bud vase add that effortless summer energy.

This refresh took less than an hour but had a big impact: lighter color, thoughtful placement, and a few textured accents transformed the shelves into a breezy focal point. The room now feels calmer and more inviting—perfect for lazy summer evenings.
If you’re refreshing your shelves this season, focus on three things: color harmony, variety in scale and texture, and breathing room. Let each shelf have a small focal point and enough empty space around it so the eye can rest.
Feel free to pin your favorite images or use them as inspiration for your own summer shelf styling. I’d love to hear—are you decorating with blue and white this summer, too?
