Get inspired by this dining room arranged with coastal decor—beautiful ideas to create your own beach-house look. Turquoise jars, seashells and candlelight combine to evoke the scent of salt air and a calm, relaxed summer mood.
Last week I finally channeled my inner beach-house decorator. With the kids away for a few days at their grandparents’, I had uninterrupted time to redesign the dining room. It felt amazing to take my time and play with ideas without the usual distractions—no hurried decisions, no small voices asking for snacks or toys. It was pure, calm creative time.
I’ve always been drawn to coastal influences—natural woven textures, sea-glass blues and soft greens—but this time I leaned in more intentionally toward a beach-house aesthetic. The result is a dining setup that looks like it belongs on a seaside porch: layered textures, a concentrated turquoise palette and a collection of small, seaside treasures clustered as the centerpiece.
As a funny aside, my husband joked that the room looked like King Triton from The Little Mermaid was hosting a party. I wasn’t sure whether to be amused or slightly offended, but we laughed about it. My goal was relaxed coastal charm—not a Disney vibe—so I hope most people see the seaside inspiration rather than a cartoon reference.

Usually I prefer just a subtle nod to beachy styling and I often pull in pinks for summer, but for this tabletop I limited the palette to greens, blues and a strong turquoise accent. The cohesive color story makes the whole arrangement feel more purposeful and calming.
My starting point was a set of coastal napkins with shell motifs that I found in the Opal House line. I loved the soft aqua tones and the little shell details—so much so that they dictated the rest of the table palette. I only had six of those napkins, so I paired them with navy pom-pom fringe napkins at the ends of the table for a balanced look.
To anchor the centerpiece I used a driftwood-look tray I’ve had since last fall. Its weathered texture reads very coastal and made a natural base for layering. I filled and surrounded the tray with shells from a box I keep for summer decor, placing a large shell or a small grouping at each place setting for an easy, authentic touch.
A collection of antique blue Ball mason jars served as the focal point. I arranged several of them in varying heights down the center of the table and tucked shells and small accents between them. Grouping similar glass pieces amplifies the color and creates a cohesive centerpiece without looking cluttered.
I also repurposed turquoise vases as candle holders. The candle openings were a touch larger than the candles I had, so I dripped a bit of wax around the base to give the look a worn, authentic feel—like the candles had been used on many summer evenings by the sea. Candlelight pairs so beautifully with coastal decor; it instantly transports the mood to a porch overlooking the ocean, even if we’re still in suburbia.
I also used wire fruit baskets as votive holders—placing jar lids under the candles to protect the paper baskets from wax and to add a safety buffer. I only burned those candles briefly for ambiance, but the extra precaution keeps everything tidy and safe.
Adjacent to the dining room I lightly refreshed the foyer for summer with a few simple touches—nothing elaborate, just a little seasonal uplift. My favorite piece in the entry right now is a small “relax” rope sign I made; it’s one of my favorite summer crafts and fits perfectly with the coastal vibe.
One practical improvement I’m thrilled about in the entry is a new light fixture I installed for under $100. It transforms the space, and I no longer have to work around outdated lighting in photos. Small updates like lighting or a new sign can make a big difference in how a space feels.
