Adding Christmas decor to the primary bedroom may sound extravagant, but waking up to the soft glow of a tree makes the whole room feel warm, cozy, and festive.
I know it’s late in the season for decorating ideas, but I wanted to share this room because we finally bought a bed frame. In twelve years of marriage we never had a proper bed frame — just a metal frame with a DIY headboard. Over the years I kept saving and searching for the right style and price. We even slept on two XL twin mattresses on adjustable frames for a while, which meant the bed shopping process took longer than I expected. Eventually I chose a simple four-poster style that suits our home better; it simply sits around the adjustable bases without the slats, and the frames still work perfectly.

Once the bed was in place, it felt natural to layer holiday touches over the pieces we already own. This year I embraced the furniture my husband brought into our marriage and selected bedding and art that fit our updated aesthetic. I switched the seasonal bedding to plaid for the holidays and replaced the wall art above the bed with a winter landscape print that I’ll keep up through spring. After the holidays I’ll return to my usual blue bedding, which complements the art nicely during winter months.

The flocked tree is on display again this year, though many of its lights stopped working. I spent hours replacing bulbs and troubleshooting, but more than half still won’t light. It’s a budget tree, so I may replace it next year or simply add extra strands of lights. For now, its snowy look still works in the room and pairs well with the plaid bedding.
I took a simplified approach to decorating: instead of hanging all the ornaments on the tree, I grouped mercury glass and vintage-style mini ornaments in a wooden bowl beside the tree. It’s an easy vignette that catches the tree’s reflection and adds a pretty shimmer when the lights are on. The wooden bowl had lived in the dining room, but I loved the store photo of ornaments layered in it so much that I recreated that look here.
One playful detail: a small train set sits under the tree in the master bedroom. It’s a bit unconventional, but it’s the only place I had room without a tree skirt, and my girls love playing with it here. That train set was my younger daughter’s main wish when she was three, so I like keeping it out each year.
Aside from the tree, bowl of ornaments, and seasonal art, most of the decor is repurposed greenery and pieces from my holiday stash. A few simple accents — plaid ribbon, a pinecone-filled bowl, and a couple of pre-lit tabletop trees — create a layered, cozy feel without cluttering the room. I also left existing curtains and window treatments in place and relied on brass hardware and textured linens to add warmth.
There’s still an unfinished sitting area in the bedroom that functions more like a workspace leftover from a busy year. I’d like to add seating and a rug there in the future to make it feel intentional rather than transitional. The large blank wall above the dresser also needs a creative solution; eventually I’ll mount the TV and style the wall, but for now the seasonal art helps balance that side of the room.
Last year I decorated the girls’ shared bedroom and kept a tree in my older daughter’s room; this year they have separate rooms and the trees remain in their respective spaces. Their decor hasn’t changed much since last year, so I didn’t take new photos, but both rooms still spark the same holiday joy.
At the end of the day, I recommend decorating with items that make you smile. For me, that’s plaid bedding, a softly lit tree, and a few thoughtful vignettes scattered through the room. Those small choices are enough to transform our bedroom into a warm holiday retreat.
