Traditional Red and Green Christmas Mantel with Plaid Accents
It’s my favorite time of year again, and my favorite spot to decorate is the mantel — so this might be my favorite post of the season. This year I stuck with a classic red and green palette for my mantel decor, and the whole house follows that theme. I’m absolutely loving the cozy, festive vibe.
I’m also completely smitten with plaid this year. Fortunately, the stores were stocked with plenty of lovely plaids, so I had lots of great options. You’ll see a hint of plaid on the mantel, and there’s more plaid in my full home tour. The layered patterns and traditional colors add warmth and a timeless holiday feel.
Plaid (or tartan) is a pattern of criss-crossed horizontal and vertical bands in multiple colors. Historically woven in wool, tartan patterns are now produced in many fabrics, and they make wonderful accents for holiday decorating because they evoke a classic, homey feeling.
This mantel started with two foundation pieces. First, a pallet I assembled last summer and painted antique white for my fall mantel. Second, a faux pre-lit garland I picked up after last Christmas — I found a 12-foot garland at a great price and it made a huge impact. Combining those two elements created the perfect canvas for everything else.
I added a wreath I bought after Christmas last year and embellished it with pinecone picks, a vintage folding ruler shaped into a star, and a plaid ribbon bow. The ruler — a small vintage find — brings so much character, and the oversized plaid bow ties the wreath into the rest of the mantel decor. I made the bow using a simple burlap-bow tutorial adapted to the plaid ribbon for a more festive look.
Layered textures and small, meaningful details make holiday decor feel curated rather than cluttered. I included a mix of thrifted, handmade, and store-bought pieces so the mantel feels personal. For example, the stenciled drop-cloth pillow I made adds a neutral, handmade touch that balances the rich reds and greens.
I also introduced new store-bought trees this year. After eyeing a few designs for weeks, I brought home two petite trees that paired perfectly with the mantel — one with berry accents and another with burlap and subtle glitter. Sometimes the perfect store pieces save time and look great alongside handmade items.
There’s no rule that every item has to be DIY. For me, decorating is a mix of crafting, thrifting, and selecting a few special store finds. That balance keeps the process enjoyable without feeling exhausting.
I paired a couple of longstanding accessories — like our deer and plate stocking holders — with Pottery Barn stockings for a classic look. I turned the stockings to show the decorative side in photos and added plaid ribbon accents to echo the mantel’s color story. Little coordinated touches like that help the whole vignette feel cohesive and intentional.
Once the garland was lit, the mantel became extra cozy. The soft glow of the lights, the small trees, and the fire in the hearth create a lovely spot for quiet evenings. I love sitting on the couch and enjoying that warmth — it’s one of the simple pleasures of the season.
