Here’s the reveal of the girls’ bathroom refresh. The makeover made a compact bathroom feel larger, brighter, and more personal without tearing anything out.
I always start each project with the end in mind, so I was determined to finish this room before moving on. That’s why I create a mood board or vision board for every makeover—having a clear plan helps keep the project focused and efficient.
The goal for this small bathroom was to add personality and maximize function without creating clutter. The space is tight, so I kept changes simple and impactful—using finishes and accessories to add character rather than bulky items.
How to Create Big Style in a Small Bathroom
Here are the main ways I introduced personality and function into the room:
1. Make the Floor the Star
In a tiny bathroom, a standout floor can deliver the “wow” factor. I installed peel-and-stick vinyl tiles with a bold pattern to draw the eye downward and add personality without a major renovation. These tiles are an affordable, DIY-friendly option that look great and have held up well since installation.
Peel-and-stick tiles are a smart solution when you want big visual impact without the cost or mess of a full floor replacement.
2. Update the Lighting
Lighting dramatically affects how a small space feels. You can replace the entire fixture, or update just the shades for a quicker refresh. I swapped out dated shades for modern glass globe shades to give the vanity area a cleaner, more contemporary look.
Tip: measure both the width and depth of the fixture before buying shades so they fit evenly and don’t stick out.
3. Add Smart Storage
In compact bathrooms, smart storage is essential. Use hooks, baskets, wall shelves above the toilet, and shower caddies to keep things off the floor and easily accessible.
Hooks are especially useful for children’s bathrooms because they’re easy to reach. I added hooks to a colorful board-and-batten accent wall so the space is both attractive and practical. Over-the-toilet shelving or a small cabinet is another great option when you need extra storage; otherwise, a decorative basket on the tank can hold spare toilet paper or small items.
4. Add Character with Art and Decorative Pieces
Finish the room with curated accessories—art, signs, architectural pieces, and a wreath can give the space personality. I varied textures and styles to keep the decor interesting and layered.
Charming accessories used in this refresh included a wood cut-out sign, an antique arched window frame, a eucalyptus wreath, a whimsical bathroom sign, scented candles, large floral art, faux greenery in a galvanized bucket, and pink towels and bath mats to add a pop of color for the girls.
5. Brighten the Room with Paint
Light, airy paint will instantly make a small bathroom feel bigger. Because this room has no natural light, I painted the walls a very light white to open and brighten the space. White walls also provide a clean backdrop for colorful accents and patterned flooring.
Even though the trim and mirror frame are white too, the wall color helps reflect light and visually expand the room.
6. Frame the Mirror for a Custom Look
Rather than remove a large builder-grade mirror, I framed it. A simple wood frame transforms a plain mirror into a custom focal point using a few boards, glue, and paint.

The before photos show a bathroom that lacked personality and finishing touches. Painting the walls, updating hardware and lighting, adding patterned flooring, and layering decor turned the space into a brighter, more personalized bathroom the whole family enjoys.
The result is a light, cheerful bathroom tailored to the girls’ tastes while staying practical for everyday use. Small investments in paint, lighting, flooring, storage, and finishing accessories can make a dramatic difference in compact spaces.
